How to Get a Specialty License Plate in Delaware

  1. Step 1

    Log on to the official Delaware state government website.

  2. Step 2

    Click on "List of Agencies" and click on "Motor Vehicles."

  3. Step 3

    Select "Vehicle Services" and "Special Tags."

  4. Step 4

    Review a sample of popular specialty plates offered by the Division of Motor Vehicles. Read the descriptions and note eligibility requirements.

  5. Step 5

    Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click the link to see the full list of specialty license plates offered by the division.

  6. Step 6

    Gather eligibility documentation if your specialty license plate requires it. Contact the sponsoring organization and ask them about acceptable forms of documentation.

  7. Step 7

    Locate your local Motor Vehicle Division branch by clicking on "Contact Us" at the bottom of the page. Identify your county and find locations, telephone numbers and hours of operation.

  8. Step 8

    Drive to the nearest Motor Vehicle Division branch. Request a "Special Tag" application. Complete the application. Provide eligibility documentation, if necessary. The MVD agent will advise you of any other special prerequisites that need to be met in order to be issued the specialty license plate.

    Meet the remaining requirements for the specialty license plate, if necessary.
