How to Get a Specialty License Plate in Arizona

Arizona's Department of Transportation offers specialty license plates for drivers who want to adorn their cars with something other than the standard plate. Choose from specialty plates devoted to education, the environment, heritage, transportation, social awareness, pets and medical causes to spice up the exterior of your car. Read on to learn how to get a specialty license plate in Arizona.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Log on to Arizona's Department of Transportation website. Click on "Motor Vehicle Division."

  2. Step 2

    Select "Forms and Publications" and "MVD Forms."

  3. Step 3

    Type "96-1043" in the form number box and press "Search."

  4. Step 4

    Verify that the results show a link to Arizona's special plate application.

  5. Step 5

    Download the special plate application. Print it.

  6. Step 6

    Write your name and address on the form. Provide your vehicle's year, make, vehicle identification number, its current plate number and the date on which it expires.

  7. Step 7

    Check the box next to the specialty plate that you are interested in obtaining. Note the numbers in parenthesis next to the specialty plate name. These numbers denote the amount of characters that are allowed on the plate if you choose to personalize it.

  8. Step 8

    Personalize your specialty license plate by providing alphanumeric character combinations in order of preference on the form. Observe all rules pertaining to personalized license plate lettering. Provide the meanings behind your choices on the form. Failure to provide explanations will result in a rejected application.

  9. Step 9

    Sign and date your application. Provide your daytime telephone number.

  10. Step 10

    Total your fees and make a check payable to Motor Vehicle Division.

  11. Step 11

    Mail your application and fees to Mail Drop 8012, Special Plates Unit, Motor Vehicle Division, PO Box 2100, Phoenix, Arizona, 85001-2100.

  12. Step 12

    Receive your specialty license plates within four weeks. Use your plates upon receipt.
