Any post player in basketball must know how to shoot a jump hook. The jump hook is a very difficult shot to defend because when executed correctly it is practically impossible to block. Read on to learn how to shoot a jump hook.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Establish good position in the post. To shoot a jump hook you must be within 10 feet of the basket. A jump hook is not as accurate as a regular jumper. In order to be successful, you will need to post up no more than seven or eight feet from the basket. The best place to shoot a jump hook is from the block.

  2. Step 2

Pivot 90 degrees so that your body is perpendicular with the defender's body. This will place your body firmly between the defender and your shot. To block your shot the defender will have to go through your body which generally results in a foul. If you pivot to your left, you will shoot with your right hand and if you pivot to your right, you will shoot with your left hand.

  3. Step 3

Use the backboard to cushion your shot. Aim at the top corner of the box that is painted above the rim. When you shoot a jump hook off of the backboard it is much more likely that the shot will go in.

  4. Step 4

Jump and extend your shooting arm straight up in the air. To begin the shot jump straight up in the air and push your arm upward to raise the ball over your head. When you shoot a typical shot your elbow will be pointed at the rim. When you shoot a jump hook your elbow will form a right angle with the rim.

  5. Step 5

Release the shot at the highest point of your jump. The shot should be one fluid motion including the jump, raising your arm and the releasing the ball at the apex of your jump.

  6. Step 6

Shoot the ball with your wrist. As stated in step four your elbow will not be facing the rim so you must make sure that your hand is. Turn your wrist so that your hand is aligned with the corner of the box on the backboard that you are aiming at. Flick your wrist towards your aiming point and let the ball roll off of your index and middle fingers to get the correct backspin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Expect contact to your body when shooting a jump hook. If you anticipate being bumped, you can absorb that contact without it affecting your shot.
  • You can turn your body 180 degrees so that your shoulders and elbow are squared up to the rim to shoot a jump hook. This will make it much more like a one handed jump shot, but in doing so you do not have your body between the defender and the shot which allows the defender easier access to block the shot.
