Whether it is a typical family unit, a single parent family or a family without children, the thing that makes a family work is how its members care for and treat each other. If the family relationship is negative, more often than not, other societal issues arise from one or more of its members. Here are some steps that can help to improve family relations.

  1. Step 1

    Communicate. Communication is a critical element in successful family relations. Without proper communication, the family relationship cannot improve. Make time to touch base, share, plan, listen or just talk with each other. It is truly the only way to know how each one is doing.

  2. Step 2

    Commit to each other. Make the time and spend the time together as a family. Engage often in fun activities together. Itis crucial for a healthy family.

  3. Step 3

    Share responsibilities. Each able family member should have responsibilities in the home to fulfill. This teaches the importance of working together for the benefit of the family and sets clear rules and expectations.

  4. Step 4

    Engage in a spiritual pursuit. Attend church or go to a religious activity together. This enhances and emphasizes the values you have as a family.

  5. Step 5

    Respect each other, speak kindly and treat each other how you would want to be treated. Do not take things for granted.

    Watch what you do especially pertaining double standards. Children learn from your example, not what you tell them. You will also lose the respect of your partner if you do not practice what you preach.

    Encourage open discussion in your relationship. Talk about issues and work out solutions together.

    Know your limits when having an argument or heated discussion. Take a break when you need to. This prevents frustrations and regrets later on. Never go to bed angry.

    Give tender loving care to each other. Never give up on loved ones.
