We are living in a material world, and the only way to make it so is by spending a few extra bucks to get the newest gadgets and toys. But all those extras add up--whether it is eating out, buying toys for the kids or getting a handful of those "must-have" items at the checkout line. All that needless spending can be cut down if you make an effort and eliminate a few things that you just don't need. Read on to learn how to cut monthly spending in half.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Create a budget for you and your family by looking over your last two months expenses. Looking at it all at once, on paper, forces you to take a hard look at what you are really spending each month. Make a budget that includes room for some fun spending and watch carefully when you automatically pull out that debit card for something you might not need.
Step2
Ask yourself a very important question when making a purchase. Determine whether an item is truly something you need or whether it is something you want. A lot of times, it can be easy to think you may need something when, really, you can live without it. The key is asking yourself these questions almost every time you make a purchase.
Step3
Make a goal for the amount of money you want to cut in your spending cash. Without a goal, it is harder for people to see just how much they have accomplished. Most people need a reward of some kind in order to keep working toward a goal, so keep track of the amount you have saved and you will soon have something to celebrate.
Step4
Keep cash out of your pockets. It is very easy to spend cash and even easier to forget where it all goes. Without a record of where your money went, people tend to dismiss the fact that their account is slowly being drained and sometimes used to buy frivolous things.
Step5
Cut coupons to use at the grocery store and your local retailers because every little bit counts. Shop the sales as well. As long as you do your research, you can find some really great deals. It may only look like 50 cents here and there, but the savings you earn can really add up.
Step6
Pack your lunch for work each day. An average lunch out can cost between $5 and $10 dollars a day, making it a minimum expense of $35 each week. If cutting out your lunches outside the office completely is too much, cut it back to one lunch per week. This still gives you the opportunity to eat out and still cut down your spending.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are really struggling with how to cut back on your spending, sit down with a financial adviser. A neutral opinion can help you determine what you do and don't need to spend each month.
