Things You'll Need

  • Wide, white cloth or plastic headband

  • Scissors

  • White posterboard

  • Bobbie pins

  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks or a stapler

A white headband is useful in making a flying nun costume.

"The Flying Nun" was a well-known TV show in the late 1960s. The star of the show was Sally Field. She played a diminutive novice with headgear that enabled her to fly, often right into trouble. Making a homemade "Flying Nun" hat is an inexpensive accessory to go with a nun costume. This is a quaint idea for a masquerade or Halloween party and the rest of the costume is just as uncomplicated to put together.

Step 1

Place the white headband on your head so that the front section is at your hairline above your forehead.

Step 2

Cut a poster board with scissors in a large triangle shape approximately 18 inches at the base -- or bottom section -- of the triangle shape.

Step 3

Bend the triangle shape so that the base section curves over the top of your head down to each ear.

Step 4

Adjust the poster board so that it rises above your hair approximately 1 to 2 inches.

Step 5

Pin the triangle shape in position with bobbie pins near the ear areas.

Step 6

Cut about 1 inch of the pointed section off the tip of the triangle if you desire.

Step 7

Draw two marks about 3 inches apart to indicate where the headgear sits above the crown of your head. This is where you will place the glue for the next section.

Step 8

Remove the headgear from your head. Lay it on a flat work surface.

Step 9

Cut a strip from another white poster board that is approximately 6 inches wide by 24 inches long.

Step 10

Trim the ends of the strip with scissors to create a pointed shape to form the wings of the hat. Draw a line down the middle of the strip.

Step 11

Place two streams of hot glue down along the marks you made on the first section. Set the second piece of poster board on top of it with the line you made positioned between the two marks on the first piece. Do this immediately before the glue dries. Make sure to get the piece centered well over the marks. Another option is to use a stapler to attach it to the first piece you cut.

Step 12

Set the hat on top of your head again lifting the poster board away from your hair an inch or two. Secure the ends of the first piece with bobbie pins near your ears.

Step 13

Bend each end of the posterboard strip down approximately 6 inches on each side to form the wings of the hat.

Tip

Wear a long white skirt with a button-down, long-sleeved shirt to create a nun costume to go with your hat. Another idea is to wear a full length white apron.
