How to Clip Guinea Pig Nails

While guinea pigs don't enjoy getting their nails clipped, they do need to have them cared for on a regular basis. It's easy to learn how to clip a guinea pig's nails, and it's definitely something you can do at home. Plan to clip your guinea pig's nails once a month to keep your small pet healthy and happy.

      Know that guinea pigs have four toes on their front feet and three toes on their back feet.

    Clip Your Guinea Pig's Nails

      Prepare to clip your guinea pig's nails by placing your guinea pig on your lap with its tummy facing out.

      Hold your guinea pig lightly around the stomach.

      Use your nail clippers to remove the tip of the nail on the front and back feet, before it reaches the "quick" or the pink section of the nail.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can apply a little cornstarch to your guinea pig's nail if you accidentally cut into the quick.

  • If your guinea pig has dark nails, it can be hard to judge how much of the nail should be removed. Use your best judgment and just remove the tip.

  • You may be tempted to give your guinea pig a bath before grooming. Guinea pigs do not enjoy baths and do not need them often, if ever.
