Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Add a tropical touch to your home during the winter. Plant the Cymbidium Orchid in a special orchid potting mix. Purchase a pre-mixed soil at a garden center.

  2. Step 2

Place the houseplant in a full, high sun during winter months. During the rest of the year move it to a medium, highly lit area.

  3. Step 3

Water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. The soil should be moist, but not muddy.

  4. Step 4

Keep the Cymbidium in a cooler area in the fall. It needs three weeks of shorter days and cooler temperatures around 55 degrees F. or below to allow for new blooms.

  5. Step 5

Fertilize every 2 weeks while the plant is in active growth and during blooming.

Tips & Warnings
  • Propagate the plant using the division method of cutting for great results. Leave the main stem and at least four shoots with it.
  • Dilute the fertilizer with water to make a 2-to-1 consistency.
  • Transplant the Cymbidium outdoors during summer months.
  • Temperature fluctuations can make a big difference in growth.
  • Don't allow the soil in your houseplant to dry out.
  • Don't keep a Cymbidium in a dry house. Use a humidifier if your house is too dry. Orchids need moisture in the air and soil.
