Becoming a hair model can be an important first step in a model's career. When you are a hair model for a salon or an individual, you will mostly likely get high-quality digital photographs of yourself on the runway and in a close-up shot. While the competition can be intense, you will gain experience and get a stylish free haircut in the bargain.

Learn More About Being a Hair Model

  1. Step 1

Know that you will have a greater chance of success if your hair has never been dyed or permed.

  2. Step 2

Expect longer hair to fare better during casting calls for hair models.

  3. Step 3

Keep in mind that attitude can give you an extra edge on the competition. Be energetic and charming during your hair model interviews and casting calls.

  4. Step 4

Prepare yourself to model hairstyles that are daring, unconventional and unexpected. You could walk into a hair modeling gig with long blond hair and walk out with a brunette crew cut.

  5. Step 5

Plan on competing with a number of other potential hair models at a casting call.

  6. Step 6

Set some guidelines as a hair model if you feel you need them; but you will be most successful if you allow your hair to be fully experimented on.

  7. Get Your Hair in Top Condition

  8. Step 1

Avoid any processing treatments of any sort well in advance of a hair modeling appointment. Perms and color are discouraged and will most likely result in elimination from casting calls.

  9. Step 2

Perform deep conditioning treatments on your hair to get it soft and silky.

  10. Step 3

Shampoo and condition your hair on the day of the casting call.

  11. Find Potential Gigs as a Hair Model

  12. Step 1

Check out the announcements boards at local hair schools.

  13. Step 2

Perform a search online to find job boards in your area. Find hair modeling jobs posted by salons and individuals, and the requirements will be listed for you to review.

  14. Step 3

Walk into a few salons if you're daring. Choose ones that seem to be slightly more on the creative side with the mood that matches your personal hair goals. Ask around at more classic salons for a less drastic cut or a hip salon for a wild cut-and-color.

  15. Know What to Expect as a Hair Model

  16. Step 1

Expect your casting call to be busy and crowded. You will have to fill out an application, answer questions about your expectations for the cut and/or color, and appear in a "line-up" of other potential models.

  17. Step 2

Know that you'll be treated to a small makeover if you are chosen as a hair model. You'll have a stylist prepare your outfit and a makeup artist perfect your face.

  18. Step 3

Plan to walk the runway. You'll get photos taken at the end of the runway for the salon files.

  19. Step 4

Get compensated in some way. At the very least, you'll get your hair cut and styled for free. Other potential compensation includes free hair products, digital copies of photos taken at the event, and cash payments.

on 8/30/2008 Eeek! Please don't say DYED! As a professional stylist for over thirteen years, that word is "shear" BLASPHEMY! Substitute, "tinted" or "colored" instead. :-)
