Living in a free society affords us the right to make personal choices that may or may not be in accord with the dominant system of government. This level of freedom even gives us the option to choose anarchy if we wish to. Though most people do not opt for this route, many people do choose to follow ideologies that differ from the principles of democracy. One such ideology is communism. If your instinct is to take up the banner of the proletariat, follow these basic steps to become a communist.

on 11/2/2007 Dude, "desire to create a world unburdened by materialism" is not an ideology. Before you write something like this, at the very minimum you should read at least one paragraph from Wikipedia so you get a more realistic definition of what you wish to write about. Communism isn't about being a hippy. It's an ideology based on fantasies about classless society and communal ownership of the means of production as opposed to the capitalist/corporate means in a society driven by social class. What you just described sounds like a garden variety hippy and I should remind you that most of the hippies left the communes and became doctors, lawyers, CEOs, politicians, entrepreneurs. If that's what you got from reading Marx and Engels, read them again, or did you ever read them? Honestly....
