Avian flu is commonly found in birds, but strains of the disease have recently been found in humans. The symptoms mimic typical flu symptoms, but are much harsher. Scientists fear a mass outbreak of avian flu among humans, but so far the disease has been contained to a small number of cases.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Watch for typical flu symptoms, such as sore throat, cough, muscle aches or fever. These could be the start of the avian flu.
Step2
Pay close attention to your eyes. Eye infections, such as conjunctivitis, are also common with this disease.
Step3
Beware of severe respiratory illnesses. Pneumonia and other serious problems can develop in your lungs. Any troubles breathing should be a cause for concern.
Step4
See a doctor if you suspect avian flu. Early detection is crucial; it will allow doctors to administer anti-viral medications which can help lessen the symptoms.

Tips & Warnings

  • Humans contract avian flu from contact with infected birds and infected bird feces. Humans can also contract the disease by cleaning the cages of infected animals because the virus can stay alive on surfaces for quite some time.
  • Avian flu is not currently transferred from human to human. However, scientists fear the disease could mutate, making it transferable. If that happens, the pandemic scientists fear could become a reality.
  • If you develop flu-like symptoms after traveling to an area that recently had an outbreak of avian flu, get to the doctor immediately.
