Let's face it: home movies are boring. But you can make them more interesting and keep Uncle Jack and Aunt Jane from falling asleep by adding a few audio effects to your directorial masterpiece. The process is fairly simple. All you need is a digital file of your home movie, the right video editing software and a computer.

Step1

Check your computer to see if your operating system includes a scaled-down version of either MovieMaker for the PC or iMovie for the Macintosh. This is really all you need.

Step2

Transfer your movie to your PC or Mac by connecting your camera to your computer and downloading the video to your hard drive. Most of the newer video cameras can connect directly to your computer or record to DVD or a memory card that you can remove and pop into the appropriate slot on your computer.

Transfer or download whatever audio effects you want to add to your movie, making sure each sound is saved as a separate file.

Step4

Use your video editing software to find the spot where you want to add your audio effect. This is usually done by playing the movie on your computer until you come the section you want to edit.

Step5

Import your audio effect, usually by clicking on Import File and selecting the sound you want to add or, with some video editing software, you can simply drag and drop the sound file into the appropriate spot in your movie.

Step6

Replay that segment of the movie to make sure the audio effect is exactly where you want it and save the finished home movie to your computer.

Step7

Burn the file to a CD or DVD and make some popcorn.
