Most people are familiar with the Blackeyed Susan because of its memorable name. However, when faced with a field of wildflowers, you might find it is difficult to pick out this pretty flower. There are several surefire signs that you've found a Blackeyed Susan. Follow these steps, and you'll be a Blackeyed Susan pro.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
See yellow. The most distinguishable characteristic of a Blackeyed Susan is its bright yellow petals. The petals are medium in size; each petal is about 1-2 inches from center to tip.
Step2
Look at the center of the flower. Blackeyed Susans, true to their name, have dark purple-black centers and a dome shape. Sometimes the center will appear brown and fuzzy.
Step3
Touch the stem. Blackeyed Susans have a scratchy, rough stem.
Step4
Examine the leaves. This wildflower's leaves feel hairy when you touch them and are shaped like a mini-sword or shaft with a pointed end.
Step5
Measure the height. Blackeyed Susans are generally 2-3 feet tall and stand very straight, like a person trying to practice good posture.
Step6
Enjoy Blackeyed Susans in the summertime. Their most common blooming period is between June and August.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Blackeyed Susan is native to the United States. Although it's entirely possible to see the plant in other countries, double check the characteristics when you're plant hunting overseas.
  • Next time you drive through Maryland, look for the Blackeyed Susan--it is their state flower.
  • Blackeyed Susans can often be found by the side of the road or in open meadows. They are also commonly used to beautify outdoor areas.
  • Don't confuse Blackeyed Susans with Browneyed Susans, which have a smaller head and bloom in late summer through fall.
  • Blackeyed Susans do not grow well in soil that doesn't drain properly. If you see black stems, the plant is probably growing in a soil fungus caused by too much water.
