Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Distinguish the Spanish Flag Vine by its bright colored flowers. Vivid yellows, oranges and dark reds are characteristic of Spanish Flag. You may also observe a creamy white color at the base of each flower.
Step2
Look for leafy green foliage and long stems that grow in branch formation. It is easy to think of vines as having one long stem, but Spanish Flag has many branches with flowering clusters, or "spikes," on the end of each branch.
Step3
Determine if the flowers on the vine are tube-shaped. If they are tubular, bright in color and about 12 to a branch, you have found a Spanish Flag.
Step4
Peek around for bees, birds and butterflies. All three of these creatures (particularly bees) are attracted to the Spanish Flag vine.
Step5
Measure the growth. Spanish Flag vines are shorter than many vines, averaging a length of 6 to 10 feet. You may occasionally run into a 20 foot Spanish Flag, but they are normally under 15 feet.
Step6
Wait until the summer or fall to identify Spanish Flag. The vine is frost-sensitive and planted in the late spring.
