How to Move the Taskbar Around on the Screen

Moving the taskbar on the display to a different location is an easy task to accomplish. If the user does not like the new position of the taskbar, it is a small matter to repeat the steps and return the taskbar to its original position. The operating system used the following example is Windows XP with SP2.

Instructions

    • 1

Perform a right mouse click on the taskbar. This opens a menu.

    • 2

Move the cursor to "Lock the Taskbar" and ensure that it does not have a checkmark next to it. If it does, click the "Lock the Taskbar" item to remove the checkmark.

    • 3

Hold the left mouse button down and move the cursor over the taskbar. Move the mouse cursor to the desired location on the display; this drags the taskbar to that location.

    • 4

Release the left mouse button to position the taskbar.

    • 5

Right-click again on the taskbar. Click on the "Lock the Taskbar" item in the menu list to lock the taskbar in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the mouse slips off the taskbar, just put the cursor back over the taskbar and perform another left mouse click and hold while moving the mouse around to place the taskbar in another position on the display. Four possible locations are bottom, top, left and right sides of the display.
