That time of year has come around again. Tax season is one of the busiest times of year for businesses and individual citizens. There are many forms to prepare, one of which is Tax Schedule 1040. Follow these steps to learn how to complete this form.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Input your personal information at the top of the page. If you acquired Schedule 1040 out of your tax booklet then you can just place your label in this spot and fill out your social security information. In the box directly below select your filing status.

  2. Step 2

Check box 6a under "Exemptions" if no one else claims you as their dependent. If you're claiming your spouse, check box 6b and fill out the information in 6c. This is also where you would fill out information on your children or other dependents if they are not being claimed by someone other than you. Complete the total located to the right of this section.

  3. Step 3

Complete the section on "Income" using your W-2 or 1099 forms. If you have multiple forms, then total them together. Add lines 7 through 21 together and enter your total in line 22.

  4. Step 4

Enter your adjustments in lines 23 through 35 under "Adjusted Gross Income." These include self-employed health insurance adjustments, IRAs and Alimony. Total these lines together and enter in line 36. Take this total, subtract it from line 22 and enter that amount in line 37.

  5. Step 5

Fill out the information on lines 38 through 55 under "Tax and Credits." Add these together and put the total on line 56. Subtract this total from line 46 and input it on line 57. If the total of line 56 is greater that line 46 enter 0 on line 57.

  6. Step 6

Finish the other sections on "Taxes" and "Payments." If information is put in these sections additional forms will be required.

  7. Step 7

Write in the information under "Refund" if you have one due to you. You will need your bank account information if you would like direct deposit. If you owe money then fill out the section titled "Amount You Owe." Sign your form when finished and mail it in.
