Step 1
Setup a firewall and modify it to only allow access from sources or people you trust. You can use the firewall that came with your operating system or purchase one as part of a security suite or stand-alone product. A few resources are listed below.
-
Step 2
Password-protect your PC. Most operating systems allow you to set up a sign-on and password, which will block anyone else from using your PC. This can also be used to limit access to networks.
-
Step 3
Install virus and worm protection and update it often. Cyber intruders are continually finding new ways to make life miserable, so it's essential that any security package you choose be able to detect the new intruders.
-
Step 4
Make sure the security or anti-virus program you choose can detect new strains of viruses and worms through their behavior patterns, even if there are no virus definitions for them.
-
Step 5
Watch where you surf. Be wary of unsafe websites that may have viruses or worms attached to them or e-mail you don't recognize. Definitely don't click on attachments in e-mails from people you don't know.
-
Step 6
Set up an e-mail scanner that will check incoming messages for viruses and worms. A SPAM blocker may also be a good idea. Both of these are usually provided by your ISP and are included in most security suites.
