No matter who you work for, chances are there is a policy in place that denotes what is appropriate and inappropriate to wear to the office. If you are unsure of your company's policy, or if you aren't sure who to ask, you can follow a few simple steps in order to ensure that you are wearing suitable office attire.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Invest in a suit. It's usually not necessary to wear a suit to work every day, however, your wardrobe should include at least one. Until you are sure of the dress code, always wear a suit to important meetings. Also, wearing a blue or black one to an interview allows you to look and feel professional even if you haven't yet landed yourself the perfect corporate job.
Step2
Choose tailored pants and skirts in key colors. When purchasing these items, look for certain shades such as black, blue and tan, which you can mix and match with more colorful items.
Step3
Add a splash of color. Just because you work in a business environment doesn't mean that you have to be boring. When wearing a suit, jazz it up with a lavender camisole or baby blue oxford shirt. This helps keep your wardrobe fresh and vibrant without forcing you to spend a lot of money.
Step4
Take care of your shoes. When choosing them, look for comfort as there are times when you may be standing for long periods. Keep them polished if necessary, and free of mud, dirt, and dust. To stay within your budget, stick with colors that match your office attire.
Step5
Groom responsibly. Keep facial hair neatly trimmed and makeup to a minimum.
Step6
Think ahead. If you live in an area that experiences cold winters, buy yourself a overcoat to slip on over your suit or other office attire for when the temperatures get chilly. It is always a good idea to purchase a few key items early so that you won't need to get them all at once.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is okay to have tattoos, but remember to keep them covered at the office.
  • Avoid wearing flip-flops unless specifically told otherwise by a supervisor.
  • Avoid tank tops and cleavage bearing or see-through T-shirts.
