How to Become a Tornado Chaser

A tornado chaser follows weather forecasts and gets closer to tornadoes instead of avoiding them like most people. Most tornado chasers are hobbyists and adventurous souls with an interest in meteorology and excitement, instead of aspiring to be weather forecasters.

    Instructions

      • 1

Study weather patterns for your area by watching local news reports and The Weather Channel. Learn where "Tornado Alley" is located, and consult meteorology texts and websites to improve your tornado forecasting skills.

      • 2

Drive closer to the tornado. Gas up your car and follow maps or your GPS tracking device to get close to the storm. Bring a friend or two with you to take photos or man the camcorder while you're driving.

      • 3

Charge your cell phone. Your cell phone will be the lifeline to storm information from off-site friends and forecasters, and will keep you in touch with news reporters and other folks who want to hear about the tornado.

      • 4

Practice safe chasing. Get close enough to the tornado to film it and take clear photos, but don't drive too close or get out of your car in dangerously windy weather.

      • 5

Upload your chaser video of the storm to YouTube or post photos on your own website or blog. Send pics or video to your local TV newscast. Then start researching the next tornado.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Ask permission to take photos or film from stores, schools or private residences.
