Calf roping is a rodeo event that requires much skill on the part of the rider and the horse. The calf roping event was developed from working on ranches and bringing in sick calves. If you want to learn how to get started in this challenging sport, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study videos on roping techniques to learn how to properly throw a rope. There are many calf roping videos made by professional calf ropers.

  2. Step 2

Attend rodeos and watch the calf roping event. Notice that the event is started by backing your horse into the roping box and waiting for the calf to reach the end of the string before starting after him. Certain rules apply about tying the calf and mounting the horse again.

  3. Step 3

Find a good horse to use for calf roping. Not all horses like cows and are willing to chase a calf. You need a horse who has been used for roping before or is fully trained and willing to learn.

  4. Step 4

Practice roping a dummy calf. You can get a fake calf head to stick in a bale of hay, or buy a full-sized dummy shaped like a calf. Practice roping the dummy every day from different distances and angles.

  5. Step 5

Participate in a rodeo in the calf roping event. Learning by mistakes and experience can further your skills in calf roping.

Tips & Warnings
  • A good calf roping horse can be expensive. Trained calf roping horses know exactly what to do and what is expected of them. They chase the calf, keeping you at a good distance for roping and stop as soon as you have thrown your rope at the calf.
