Bareback bronco riding is one of rodeo's most physically demanding sports. Not only do bareback riders have to control a wild bucking bronco, they must hang on with one hand while concentrating on marking the horse for a good score. If you want to become a bareback bronco rider, read the following tips to learn how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study a bareback bronco rider ride a horse in a rodeo. Notice that he must hold on to the horse, hold one hand in the air, lean his body back and continuously "mark" the horse with his heels. All of these things must be done to receive a score for the rodeo.

  2. Step 2

Talk to other bareback bronco riders, and find out where they learned how to ride. Some may even offer to give you tips and pointers for the event. Listening to experienced bareback bronco riders can help you understand more about the sport.

  3. Step 3

Attend a riding clinic for bareback bronco riders. You can learn how to ride the horse correctly and find tips and tricks on getting a better score.

  4. Step 4

Know what equipment is used for the event. You need your own rigging, spurs and proper attire. Most rodeos require contestants to wear boots, bluejeans and a long sleeve button-down shirt. You are also required to start the event with a cowboy hat on.

  5. Step 5

Participate in a small rodeo in the bareback bronco riding event. Experience is the best way to improve your riding and scores.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't think you can hang on to a bucking horse and just show up at a rodeo expecting to ride in an event. Besides needing your own gear, you must know all of the rules of riding a bucking bronco. Not following the rules can get you disqualified.
