How to Turn a Car into the General Lee

The General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard is one of the most famous cars in history. It may have been a bigger star on the show than the characters. Many die-hard fans of the show and car collectors have built their own versions of the car. One place they love to show the cars off at is the annual Dukes of Hazzard festival, Dukesfest.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Start with the right car. You'll want a Dodge Charger from the late 1960s or early 70s. The actual car in the show was a 1969 Charger.
Step2
Seal the doors shut with a welding torch. The car must be entered from the window, like a true stock car.
Step3
Install a CB radio in the car. It won't be much use if no one else you know has a CB, but it is important if you want the car to be exact. An auto mechanic or detailer can help you with installation.
Step4
Install a car horn that plays "Dixie." If you're turning a smaller, more modern car into a General Lee, this could prove difficult. A lot of novelty horns require large engine space.
Step5
Paint the car body orange. Add the number "01" in black numbers trimmed in white on the doors. Add the Rebel flag on the roof with "General Lee" in blue letters trimmed in white above the window frames.

Tips & Warnings

  • The newly released Dodge Challenger is the one new car that will best resemble the old Charger used for the General.
  • Driving the car like the Duke boys is not recommended. It's highly unlikely you'll be able to jump cliffs like that, and you'll never outrun police cars.
