Step 1
Create a MySpace page. This is a simple process and MySpace provides prompts at every step. If you already have a space, you may want to consider creating a new one with professional components, or redesigning your current space to edit out irreverent comments and glitzy graphics.
-
Step 2
Professionalize your site. Upload a picture, but make sure it's tasteful--perhaps a head shot or snapshot from a career event. Upgrade your background using MySpace specific sites that generate code for you (see links below), but stick with a modest theme, such as a solid color, or a symbol of your profession. Personalize your blurbs (such as "my favorite movie" or "my favorite book"), but keep the comments neutral.
-
Step 3
Enter pertinent information about your profession. Use the "about me" blurbs to enter information about your career highlights and past employment.
-
Step 1
Begin creating connections by adding your alumnus/alumna information. MySpace asks for college, graduation date, year and club membership. You can later click on these to initiate a search for other alumni in your field.
-
Step 2
Further your connections by using MySpace's own "networking" blurb. Choose your field from a drop down list, along with other professional information, such as company role.
-
Step 3
Initiate searches of others in your field by clicking on a highlighted field in MySpace's "networking" blurb. This launches a search window where you can narrow down profiles based on factors such as geographic location, gender or age.
-
Step 4
Contact a potential colleague via the "contact" box, located underneath their picture. Introduce yourself and point out what you have in common.
