Billions of microbes surround our everyday lives. In a doctor's office or a hospital people are exposed to microorganisms that can seriously affect their health if medical staff do not use proper aseptic procedures. The definition of the word aseptic simply means "without microorganisms." Read the information below to apply or recognize the aseptic technique in a medical environment.

Take an Online Aseptic Technique Course

Step1
Visit the Engenderhealth website (see Resources below).
Step2
Scroll down the left menu to the "Resources" heading and click on the "Online Courses" link. Pay attention to the resources provided. Read the entire page.
Step3
Go to the "Infection Prevention" heading and select the "English" link under the "Begin this course online" title.
Step4
Review the different titles and select the "Introduction to Aseptic Technique" option.
Step5
Start taking the online course. Carefully read through each page and press the "Next" button to continue after each section.
Step6
Take the online test under the "Quiz" heading. Select the correct answers for all 8 questions. When done, press the "Get Result" button.
Step7
Review your test results and press the "Next" button. Read over the entire content under the heading "Making it work."
Step8
Practice different aseptic techniques before using them at work or around patients. Remember: practice makes perfect.

Use the Aseptic Technique

Step1
Wash hands before and between patients. Wear work scrubs or lab coats when working with clients.
Step2
Prepare each client for clinical procedures as prescribed by the Aseptic Technique Protocol in your work place.
Step3
Remember to always maintain a sterile field when handling open wounds, venipuntures or vial preparations.
Step4
Create a safer work environment by limiting traffic into patient treatment rooms.
Step5
Clean up any spills and contaminants immediately.
Step6
Make the aseptic technique a part of your normal everyday practice.
