How to Get a Motorcycle License in Alaska

Bored with four-wheeled vehicles? Try driving a motorcycle on Alaskan roadways. Alaska motorcycle licenses are available to anyone 14 years of age and older. Apply for an Alaska motorcycle license and put the excitement back into your road trips.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Logon to Alaska's official website (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

    Click on "Motor Vehicles (DMV)," "Driver Manual," and "Motorcycle Driver License Manual."

  3. Step 3

    Download and read Alaska's official Motorcycle Manual. Memorize rules of the road and practical and theoretical advice.

  4. Step 4

    Locate your local Division of Motor Vehicles office by clicking "Office Locations/Hours".

  5. Step 5

    Gather identification if you do not possess a current Alaska driver's license or identification card. Acceptable forms of identification include a birth certificate, legal or medical records, a social security card and bills proving your current address.

  6. Step 6

    Visit your local Division of Motor Vehicles office. Be sure to take your identification with you.

  7. Step 7

    Request a motorcycle operator's instruction permit. Pass a written knowledge test, a written motorcycle knowledge test and a vision test. Pay for your instruction permit.

  8. Step 8

    Practice riding your motorcycle with your instruction permit for at least 6 months. Apply the motorcycle manual's principles on real roadways.

  9. Step 9

    Return to the Division of Motor Vehicles office after 6 months. Present your instruction permit and take any remaining written tests.

  10. Step 10

    Apply for and pass a motorcycle road test or provide proof that you have successfully completed an equivalent course. Courses that can waive the motorcycle road test are the Easy Rider course, Experienced Rider course, Basic Rider course, Beginning Rider course and the Motorcycle Rider course.

  11. Step 11

    Receive your motorcycle driver's license.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must be at least 14 to apply for a motorcycle learner's permit. Applicants under 18 years of age are required to provide proof of parental consent.
  • Instruction permits remain valid for a period of 2 years. You may only renew it once.
