How to Be Comfortable Nursing

Congratulations on making the best nutrition decision for your baby and joining the ranks as a nursing mom. Although some women take to nursing like fish to water, others take a bit more time becoming comfortable with the whole process. This does not mean that you should quit nursing, but you will need to practice a few tried and true tricks before venturing out with a hungry baby.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dress appropriately for nursing. This includes a nursing bra and loose fitting tops that either unbutton from the bottom up or can be lifted for baby to fit underneath. Nursing clothes are also available in specialty stores, but should be purchased once baby has already arrived and your milk has come in.

  2. Step 2

Try different breast feeding positions without the assistance of pillows and determine which position you can most easily hold and allows baby to latch correctly. It is important to be comfortable with this before working on being discreet in public or in front of company.

  3. Step 3

Practice in front of a mirror or your spouse to determine if you are comfortable with how subtle your nursing is. Build up to nursing in front of a few friends before venturing out with a hungry baby.

  4. Step 4

Bring a small swaddling blanket with you at all times. This allows you more privacy while you get the baby latched on and your shirt arranged.

  5. Step 5

Remember that being comfortable nursing does not mean you need to be public about it, although some women are. You can easily nurse in a booth at a restaurant, the dressing room of a store, or a bench set away from the crowd.

  6. Step 6

Nurse your baby as soon as the feeding cues begin. You will draw far more attention to yourself and the situation, if your baby is extremely hungry and fussy when you try to breast feed.

Tips & Warnings
  • You set the tone about nursing your baby. If you seem comfortable, than others will seem comfortable too and vice versa.
  • Announcing you are going to breast feed is going to draw attention and make others more uncomfortable. Either begin nursing where you are or simply excuse yourself to another room.
