Working with horses is a fun, rewarding experience. Unfortunately, even a well-trained, trusted horse can get spooked and become dangerous. As a responsible horse handler, safety must be your first priority. Take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and your horse's safety.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stay alert and be prepared. Be aware of your surroundings--recognize and avoid things that may scare your horse.

  2. Step 2

Wear boots or shoes with a hard toe to protect your feet.

  3. Step 3

Approach a horse from the side, not the front or back. Make some soft noises so he is aware of your presence before you get too close.

  4. Step 4

Let the horse know where you are at all times. When grooming, start at the front and work toward the back. Keep a hand on the horse's body whenever possible so he knows your position. Use touch cues to prepare him for your next action. For example, slowly run your hand down his leg before picking up his hoof.

  5. Step 5

Stand close to a horse when you're leading him by halter. The farther away you are, the more room the horse has to maneuver around. If you stay close, he can't kick you easily or with much force.

  6. Step 6

Hold a lead rope properly. You should stand to the left of the horse, with your right hand holding the rope directly under the horse's head. The remainder of the rope should be held in the left hand. Never wrap the rope around any part of your body.

  7. Step 7

Talk to your horse. Always use a soft, soothing tone of voice.
