How to Do Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that not only focuses on physical wellness, but also on mental well-being. When practicing Kundalini yoga, you are meant to harness the energy found in the universe. Kundalini yoga was introduced in the U.S. by Harbhajan Singh Yogi, an instructor from India in the late 1970s.

  1. Step 1

    Find a class or video that teaches Kundalini yoga. Beginners need instruction to master the poses and meditation techniques uses in Kundalini yoga.

  2. Step 2

    Focus on your breathing. Each yoga exercise forces you to concentrate on breathing correctly. You must learn how to breathe as you change poses in Kundalini yoga.

  3. Step 3

    Warm up beforehand. You should stretch before you perform the more difficult Kundalini poses. Stretch your arms over your head and down to your toes to loosen the spine.

  4. Step 4

    Learn to perform kriyas. Kriyas are the combined exercises and breathing that is utilized to purify the body and increase the body's energy.

  5. Step 5

    Start out with the easy poses. Most likely your instructor will have you master poses such as Sukasana, Siddhasana and the Lotus pose.

  6. Step 6

    Expect chanting. A part of practicing Kundalini yoga is to chant mantras. Your instructor may have you bring your hands together and chant "om."
