How to Survive Getting Wisdom Teeth Pulled

Wisdom teeth typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. If there is not enough room in your mouth for them to grow, they become impacted and need to be removed. If you need your wisdom teeth extracted, you can survive the procedure by following these tips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Follow any directions given by your oral surgeon. If you are getting anesthesia, you may not be allowed any food or water several hours before the procedure starts.

  2. Step 2

Allow time to rest immediately afterwards. You are likely to feel groggy from the anesthesia. Your surgeon may not allow you to leave the office until you have recovered from the effects of the anesthesia.

  3. Step 3

Use any antibiotics or pain killers that are prescribed. You'll probably have pain after wisdom teeth extraction, so the doctor will prescribe a mild pain reliever. Antibiotics help prevent any infections from occurring.

  4. Step 4

Rinse your mouth out following meals. Gently rinsing with warm salt water helps the healing process.

  5. Step 5

Eat liquids and soft foods. Gelatin, sherbets and yogurt are the easiest things to eat following the wisdom teeth being pulled. You can add other foods to your diet once any pain in your mouth and jaw has subsided.

Tips & Warnings
  • You will experience pain and swelling for several days after the procedure. If it has been more than 3 or 4 days without any relief, contact your surgeon's office.
  • Do not eat very hot or spicy foods while you are healing from wisdom teeth extraction.

on 1/23/2009 I just went to the dr and they said that I have to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled... they wanna get them all in one shot instead of pulling some and having me come back. But the top left one isnt even showing a root, so they don't know what they are going to do. I'm really nervous... any pre op advice?

on 1/13/2009 Well now it's 6 or so hours after extraction.

I did NOT feel a THING aside from the SLIGHT pokes of the shots in the beginning. The tooth that kept me up the past week all night came out and I didn't even know it was out. Long story short I literally did not feel either 3 of my Wisdom's coming out.

The most difficult part was dealing with the dizzyness/sleepyness afterward. I wasn't knocked out, but my Doctor gave me meds to take prior to extraction (Painkillers x2 and something to make me drowsy IMMEDIATELY prior to surgery), and by God they did their job.

I'm following the recovery rules strictly, so no solid/hot foods for a handful of days, but the way my teeth feel already I'm confident I could eat just about whatever I want now.

But stick to Jello, Ice Cream, Shakes, etc. Keep your mouth clean, avoid infections and you're good to go.

I hope this helps someone.

on 1/13/2009 Just got home, hasn't been 1 hour since extractions.

I'm super dizzy and somewhat sleepy.

They gave me 4 shots in mouth and I didn't feel absolutely a thing during surgery at all! I had 3 pulled and I was in the office literally from 1pm to 120pm

Good ****. Just make sure you take care of it that's the biggy.
