How to Drive Mount Rainier National Park
Mount Rainier is a volcanic mountain located inside a large national park south of Seattle, Washington. For those with a lot of time to spare, there is a large, circular driving route that takes you through much of the park. This scenic drive is long and road conditions vary throughout the year, but you can't beat the scenery.

Call ahead to check road conditions. The number for the park headquarters is (360) 569-2211. Mount Rainier National Park is a dynamic preserve area subject to flooding. Check that the roads you intend to drive are open regardless of the time of year.

Enter the park on Route 706 at the Nisqually Entrance. Follow the road up to the Paradise Visitor's Center. Paradise is at 5,400 feet above sea level compared to 2,023 feet at the entrance. There are several trails in this area if you have time for a walk.

Continue along Route 706. It is a one-way loop that brings you back to a central point on journey up the volcano. Here you can choose to head off into uncharted territory or return the way you came. Follow the main road further east into the park if you are up for the long route. This road closes in winter months.

Follow the road approximately 19 more miles until it meets Highway 123. You are still inside Mount Rainier National Park. Go north on this road. It takes you across the park from the south to the north. Follow it to Highway 410.

Take highway 410 west and back to civilization. This road is a scenic route even when outside the park. It eventually leads you back to Interstate 5. You meet the interstate after 50 to 60 miles, depending on your destination.

Tips & Warnings
Be very cautious if you decide to hike up Mount Rainier. Stay to trails and hikes that are equal to your skill level. Do no attempt to climb a glacier or scale a cliff without proper equipment, guidance or training.
