How to Safely Post Baby Pictures Online
Documenting and sharing a babies growth as they mature into toddlers is a great experience for parents, relatives and friends. Through internet photo sharing and family web sites everyone can share in the experience and view these photos anytime day or night. The problem arises when safety precautions are not taken, and those photos become available to anyone with an internet connection.

1
Choose a reputable photo sharing site. Most large photo sharing site allow the user to make their photos private and not available to the public. Family and friends will have to be given an invitation, emailed from the photo sharing site, to view the pictures. This can be a problem for the less tech savvy users, but with a little help this should not be a problem (see resources for reputable sites).

2
Remove any personal information. Such as name, address, or even location. Basically anything a random person could use to locate the child in the picture. Because even if the photo sharing options are set to private you have no idea who is viewing the photos because family and friends often do have the protective interest that a parent has.

3
Make the family web site unsearchable. When designing the family web site install a robots.txt file into the design. This file basically tells all internet search engines to not include the family web site in their searches. (For a link to a robots.txt site see the resources section.)

4
Check search engines for the child's name. Unbeknownst to a parent, a friend or family member may have posted the child's picture on their site or some other photo sharing site. Type in the child's full name or variations on their name and click search. If their name appears contact the site that is hosting the pictures and explain that the pictures were posted without permission.
