How to Create a Windows XP Background Theme

Themes are a way that users can make Windows uniquely their own without much effort. Creating a personal theme can take some time, but it I fun to see your end product and know that you created it. Themes are created by changing the aesthetic elements of the desktop that Windows has allowed users to change.

      Right-click the desktop, select "Properties," and a Display Properties window will appear. Choose the "Themes" tab to choose a theme to apply to start with. Select "Apply" to set the changes and click "OK" to get out of the window or select another tab to make other changes.

      Choose "Desktop" tab to change the background picture appearance. The background can be from a pre-selected list that is on the left hand side of the window or select "Browse" to select a picture on your computer.

      Select "Appearance" tab and "Advanced" on the Display Properties window to change the colors of the windows borders, and fonts. Each item in the drop down menu under Item can be changed to suit the theme you are creating.

      Use a preexisting theme and make it your own by changing colors, fonts, and pointers. Windows comes with a few themes to choose from or you can purchase or download other themes.

      Change the sounds of the events on your computer in the Control Panel. Select "Sounds and Audio Devices" then the "Sounds" tab. In the Program Events list assign each event a sound, listen to each sound by pressing the right arrow to the right of the box. Click "Save As" and add the name of your scheme, like Bad Mood, or Pay Day, click "OK" twice when you are finished.

      Download Windows themes from the Internet, some are free and others, usually those that use licensed pictured or sounds, have a nominal charge. Once downloaded and installed they will appear under the Theme tab unless otherwise stated on the instructions.

      Save each theme that you make, and like for future uses. If not saved the theme will be deleted the next time you change it.

Tips & Warnings

  • The more animated the theme the more computer memory you use. These types of themes may slow the functions of your computer.
