There are thousands of miles of rivers in North Dakota. The Missouri River alone runs through North Dakota for more than 350 miles. If you feel a pull to go fishing in any of North Dakota's waters, you will need a fishing license. Here's how you can get one.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • social security number
  • driver's license
Step1
Buy your fishing license using your home computer and print it as soon as your payment goes through. This option gives you the benefit of not having to drive out of your way to get your license or having to wait for your license to arrive by mail. There is no service charge for buying your fishing license online.
Step2
Call up a licensing agent on the phone. This might be a better option for you if you do not have updated anti-theft programs on your computer to block thieves from stealing your social security number or credit card information. However, you will have to wait a couple of weeks to get your license in the mail, and you will be charged an additional service fee.
Step3
Download and print out a fishing license application using your home computer. Complete the application and mail it into the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. With this method, you can send a check. But be ready to wait several weeks before getting your license.
Step4
Buy your license in person. You can get a fishing license from any of the county auditors in the courthouses around North Dakota. You can also buy a license from a license vendor at a sporting goods store, gas station or hardware store.

Tips & Warnings

  • All residents and nonresidents more than 16 years old need a fishing license and a fishing certificate to fish in North Dakota.
  • Be prepared to purchase an additional certificate if you plan to fish for paddlefish.
