Bicycle chains aren't meant to last forever. They need to be replaced when you notice excessive wear or the chain loses tension. With the use of a chain link tool, any bicycle chain can be changed in a few easy steps. Follow these tips to change your chain and get you up and cruising in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place the bicycle upside down on a bike stand and secure in place.

  2. Step 2

Use a chain link tool to remove a link from the chain. Place the tool in the chain so the pin in the tool lines up with a link pin in the chain.

  3. Step 3

Turn the small screw crank on the link tool until it pushes out the pin in the chain link. Push the pin out, unscrew the tool's crank and remove the chain from the channel. The chain will separate into one long piece so you can remove it and change out the chain.

  4. Step 4

Install the new chain by threading it through the bicycle gears. It should be run through the bike's derailleur and around the back side of the bottom pulley and placed over the top pulley.

  5. Step 5

Thread the chain's other end through the derailleur in the front of the bicycle and over the sprockets.

  6. Step 6

Position each end of the bicycle chain into the link tool. Make sure one end of the chain should have a link pin pushed out most of the way.

  7. Step 7

Slide the chain links together and turn the link tool upside down. Rotate the crank on the tool several times to push the pin in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most new chains come with a lubricant pre-applied. There is no need to apply additional lubricant in this case.
