With the societal ills that abound around us today, it is a challenge to be safe. Even adults need to be cautious and not take things for granted. A person who is street smart is able to navigate safely through life and survive, no matter where she's at.

Make sure your family members or close friends know of your whereabouts at all times, how long you will be gone and approximately when you will return. If you are going to be late, call.

Carry a cell phone with you and program important numbers on quick dial.

Avoid going out alone if you can help it, especially in the night. Use the buddy system,especially if you are female or if you are not yet an adult. Go to the park, movies, shopping mall or school with a friend or a group of friends; it's safer when you are with others so you can keep an eye on each other.

Avoid isolated places or streets. Take the longer route if the short cut takes you through an unfamiliar or undesirable route.

Look out for safe spots such as the library, police station, a friend's house, restaurants or malls en route to your destination in case you need a place to run to in an emergency.

Remember the lesson you learned as a child. Never talk to strangers.

Watch out for people you don't know who wave you to come close to their vehicle. Run away the opposite direction of the car to a safe spot or ask for help.

Run and make as much noise as possible if a stranger is after you. Shout for help and wave your arms to get attention.

Keep money in your front pants pocket. It is harder for a pickpocket to get to. Do not carry a lot of cash or wear flashy jewelry, especially if you have to go to a less safe part of town.

Make sure you are not being tailed when you drive home or park your vehicle. Use the rear view mirror and if it appears that you are being followed, drive to the closest police station.
