Making sales over the phone isn't as easy as it may seem. Although telemarketing jobs are common and used often in the sales industry, there are several skills that should be acquired to increase the effectiveness of such sales. Many companies now hire individuals to work from home in telemarketing, and home-based businesses rely on the telephone to help increase their sales. Therefore, developing effective phone sales strategies is important.

Instructions

    • 1

Set daily goals for yourself. Decide ahead of time how many calls you're going to make, and stick to that number.

    • 2

Have a script for your calls. Practice this before making your calls until you've memorized it so that it doesn't sound scripted. In your script, make sure that you relate to your prospect and their interest in order to "hook" them and get their attention.

    • 3

Record your calls and listen to them in order to improve by learning from your mistakes.

    • 4

View each call as an opportunity, not just a sale. Explain to your prospect how your product or opportunity will improve his life or circumstance. Let him know that you simply want to help him and share a great opportunity with him.

    • 5

Make the most of each call. If you call a business and the owner or person that you need to speak with is unavailable, ask questions of the person on the phone about the company or the individual's interests. This will help you be more prepared when you do speak with your potential client or prospect.

    • 6

Ask for referrals. Always ask the client or prospect who they know who may be interested in your product or service. This can open up a lot of business.

Tips & Warnings

  • When leaving a message, just leave enough information to get people's interest.

  • If the client or prospect isn't interested, ask her why. This gives you another opportunity to get a possible "Yes" answer.

  • Don't give up just because you hear a lot of "No's"; there'll be a "Yes" eventually.
