There is almost nothing worse than being lost in an unfamiliar geographic area. Having a state map handy helps you navigate your way to safety. You can also use a state map to find a quicker route to work, avoid accidents or plan a trip. There are many places you can find an accurate state map.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Look on the Internet and check out all the major search engines. The major ones such as Google, MSN and Yahoo now have a map feature. Click on the map icon located at the top of their respective webpage. Then enter the state you're looking for. Most of these websites have an interactive map feature that allows you to zoom in and out. They will provide you with satellite images of the state and the state's weather forecast.
Step2
Visit the state's official website to find state and regional maps. The state's website will also have information about the state's geography, natural resources and parks. Some states even have an option where you can request a complimentary state map to be mailed to your house.
Step3
Check out online book stores such as Amazon, Powell and Alibris for used and new state maps. While you will not be able hold the map in your hands to see if you like it before buying it, you can look through reviews by editors and other customers.
Step4
Stop by your local book store and visit their travel section. Most book stores carry a wide selection of maps and travel guides for sale. The advantage of going to the store versus buying a state map online is you can open the maps and compare them. Maps all have slightly different features. Find the map that best fits your needs. If you are going to be using it on the road, a smaller booklike map would be preferable to a large fold-out state map.
Step5
See if your local gas station has state maps. If you're in a pinch and need a state map, most gas stations have state maps and U.S. atlases for sale. They tend to be a little more expensive than what you would find at a book store or online.
Step6
Contact the state's tourism office and ask about state maps. Most tourism offices will give you a free state map. You can stop in at your local office or give them a quick call, most have toll-free numbers.
Step7
Join a travel association or automotive club. If you're going to be on the road a lot the benefits well outweigh the membership fees. The most popular automotive group in the U.S. is the American Automobile Association (AAA). Members of AAA receive free maps and travel guides, as well as hotel discounts and 24-hour road side assistance.
