Located in eastern Kansas and spanning over 180 miles from north to south, the Flint Hills are a beautiful example of a tall grass prairie. There are many ways to experience the Flint Hills, but one thing is certain, gorgeous scenery awaits visitors no matter what adventure they choose.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Take a drive through the area. I-35 between Wichita and Topeka runs north and south through the Flint Hills. This is an easy place to start, but it is a turnpike and not the best option for excellent views. For a slower and more scenic tour try Kansas Highway 4 or 177.
Step2
Ride through the Flint Hills on horseback. Kansas Flint Hills Adventures will take you on a two to four-hour tour of the tall grass prairie for an interactive look at the landscape. Whether you're an experienced rider or have never been on a horse, you will find a package to suit your needs.
Step3
Visit Flames of the Flint Hills to see range burning in action. While a controlled burn looks beautiful from the road, you can be part of the action. Get your hands dirty and help with the fire—with supervision of course.
Step4
Join a guided walking tour of the Flint Hills. Guides will point out the wildflowers, birds and animals that are native to the area. This is an excellent option for photographers, painters and nature lovers.
Step5
Take a bike tour. Join the Tour de Florence for a 40-mile ride through the Flint Hills. If 40 miles is too long, try one of the many smaller rides offered by the cities throughout the area.
Step6
Tour the historic sites in the area. The Flint Hills touch 22 counties in Kansas and each offers a wide range of entertainment. From historic buildings and bridges to fine dining and interesting shops, you will enjoy it all.

Tips & Warnings

  • You don't have to be an outdoor enthusiast to enjoy the Flint Hills, but it helps. The majesty of the area can be viewed from the car, but the full experience lies in getting outside and experiencing the sights and sounds in person.
  • Do not try to drive through smoke during a range burn. Pull over to the right side of the road and wait for the smoke to clear.
