People think of the home as a safe and secure place for their family. However, each year many people are injured in the location they feel most secure. Learning the potential hazards and taking proactive steps to minimize risks is the best way to protect your loved ones at home. Don't delay, do a home safety check up today.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Walk through the entire home, garage and yard to confirm that you have the items listed below. Involve the whole family. Make a check list of all trouble spots and correct as soon as possible.
Step2
Review fire prevention safety. Check electrical outlets and cords; replace any damaged items. Store flammable materials away from heat sources. Practice safe cooking—don't leave the kitchen unattended. Place candles and electrical heaters away from flammable items like curtains and sheets. Keep fire sources, such as matches, away from children.
Step3
Plan for emergency response. Install several smoke detectors throughout the house. Test the detectors monthly and replace batteries twice per year. Place fire extinguishers in fire hazard areas such as the kitchen and workshop. Create a family evacuation plan and hold regular fire drills. Teach children how to call 9-1-1 as soon as they are old enough to use the phone. Keep a basic first aid kit handy.
Step4
Prevent slips and falls. Keep floors clear of items such as clothing and toys. Secure rugs to prevent slipping. Use dim lighting at night. Use caution when retrieving items stored high in a closet or cabinet--use a ladder, not a chair. Inspect ladders before use and be cautions when climbing.
Step5
Avoid accidental poisoning. Store cleaning supplies, paint, motor oil, gasoline, pesticides, hygiene supplies and medications in secure cabinets or closets to limit access. Keep all potentially hazardous materials in their original container.
Step6
Practice safety while performing do-it-yourself home projects. Take safety precautions when you perform home improvement and maintenance projects. Read the instructions before using machinery, tools and chemicals. Wear appropriate clothing and safety gear. Clean up immediately after completing the project. Securely store tools and supplies.
