The seasonal rains of the monsoon can cause flooding that halts transportation, contaminates water, disrupts electricity and limits access to supplies. People are injured by debris and fall ill from drinking tainted water. You can survive these interruptions with preparation and the right mindset.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare for monsoon season by storing food and supplies. Food should be non-perishable and easily prepared. Supplies should be battery powered or mechanical.

  2. Step 2

Check your house for any weaknesses. Reinforce windows if necessary. Secure outdoor furniture or bring it inside. Clear any trees or garbage that could be caught in the wind.

  3. Step 3

Fill everything that can be used as a container with drinking water because the overflow from the rains can introduce contaminants into tap water. The first thing you need in order to survive is water.

  4. Step 4

Repair leaks as soon as possible. Dry the area immediately to prevent further damage or the growth of mold.

  5. Step 5

Stay inside as much as possible during monsoon season. Most of the risks to your health are outside.

  6. Step 6

Listen for emergency instructions on the radio or television. Follow official recommendations for continued safety.

Tips & Warnings
  • Treat diarrhea if someone becomes ill. Remember that the primary concern is dehydration. Add salt and sugar to their water to replace electrolytes. Anyone can survive diarrhea as long as they remain hydrated.
  • Do not walk through flood waters. Strong currents and debris could injure you.
  • Beware of falling tree limbs and objects caught in the wind.
  • Avoid hills and anywhere a landslide may be possible.
