The word "Gelt" is the Yiddish for "money." During the Hasmonean Dynasty, the first gelt was produced, when Jewish coins were issued, depicting symbols of Judaism. While the tradition of the giving of gelt emerged during the Middle Ages it continues today. Modern forms of gelt include: savings bonds, dollar bills, checks and small chocolate coins wrapped in gold. During Hannukah, gelt hunts are an exciting and fun way for children and parents to honor their Jewish history.
