How to Cook a Turducken

A turducken is a great substitute for turkey or chicken at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Far from traditional, a turducken is a chicken stuffed inside a duck, which is then stuffed inside a turkey. Master cooking this unusual "bird" and your friends and family will be talking about the meal for years to come.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deboned turkey
  • Cornbread dressing
  • Deboned duck
  • Cajun rice dressing
  • Deboned chicken
  • Shrimp dressing
  • Thread or string
  • Large needle
  • Roasting pan, grill or smoker

    Make the Cornbread Dressing

  1. Step 1

    Chop the chicken livers gizzards and cook them over medium heat in cooking oil.

  2. Step 2

    Throw in the chopped celery, onion and bell pepper. Cook the vegetables until they are soft.

  3. Step 3

    Use salt, pepper and poultry seasoning to season the dressing.

  4. Step 4

    Break up the cornbread into the mixture and then add the chicken broth.

  5. Make the Cajun Rice Dressing

  6. Step 1

    Cook the ground beef in cooking oil over medium heat.

  7. Step 2

    Throw in the celery, onion and bell pepper and then add one clove of minced garlic.

  8. Step 3

    Season to taste, with salt, pepper and cajun seasoning.

  9. Step 4

    Stir in the cream of mushroom soup.

  10. Step 5

    Add the cooked rice and blend it with the beef and veggies.

  11. Step 6

    Add the beef broth.

  12. Make the Shrimp Dressing

  13. Step 1

    Cook the celery, onion and bell pepper until they are soft.

  14. Step 2

    Add the diced tomatoes and toss in the chopped shrimp.

  15. Step 3

    Use salt, pepper and a bit of red cayenne pepper to season.

  16. Step 4

    Mix the vegetables and shrimp together with the cooked rice.

  17. Construct the Turducken

  18. Step 1

    Adjust the turkey so its skin side is on the counter. Use poultry seasoning, salt and pepper to season the turkey.

  19. Step 2

    Smear the cornbread dressing on the turkey.

  20. Step 3

    Put the duck over the cornbread dressing and smear cajun rice dressing on it.

  21. Step 4

    Put the chicken over the cajun rice dressing and smear shrimp stuffing on it.

  22. Step 5

    Find someone to help you bend and hold the edges of the turkey together so you can sew it closed.

  23. Step 6

    Use your string to tie the turducken's legs together.

  24. Step 7

    Cook the turducken breast side up in a roasting pan at 325 degrees.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure each layer of dressing smeared on the poultry is about half an inch thick.
  • You can bake leftover dressing at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.
  • You can also grill or smoke the turducken at 350 degrees on either aluminum foil or in an aluminum pan.
  • When the turducken is done cooking, the meat thermometer should read 180 degrees. The turducken should take about four and a half to five and a half hours to cook.
