How to Become a Roofer

Do you like working with your hands? Would you like to become a part of the building trade? You might just want to become a roofer. It's a challenging and rewarding trade, and while it does take some work, most people can learn how to become skilled at roofing construction.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Enter an apprenticeship program. You may find them either in the phone book or online (see Resources below).
Step2
Learn the different types of roofs used in residential and commercial construction, such as flat or sloped roofs.
Step3
Study rainwater equipment (such as the creation and fitting of down spouts and gutters), working with sheet metal (soldering, riveting, marking and cutting), and developing sheet metal components.
Step4
Work with waterproofing materials. Learn to estimate the quantity needed and become familiar with reinforced liquid waterproofing.
Step5
Complete 3 years of on-the-job and in-school training for roofing certification.
Step6
Take and pass a final exam at the end of the 3 years of training. This will officially qualify you as a trained roofer.
Step7
Find employment in the type of construction you prefer by looking for roofing companies in the phone book, or by going online to such sites as Careers Construction (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay in shape. Roofing is physically demanding.
