Step 1
Keep your toddler's sleep schedule the same as much as possible. Toddlers between the ages of one and three still take daytime naps. They need between 11 and 14 hours of sleep a day including naps and at night.
-
Step 2
Keep the bedtime routine the same. Keep routines simple. Some parents include a bath, book and brushing teeth in their bedtime routines. Figure out what works best for you and your child and stick to it nightly.
-
Step 3
Offer water at night. Prepare ahead of time by putting a sippy cup of water by his bedside. For younger toddlers still in a crib, don't give into the nightly waking right away. Give them a chance to sooth themselves back to sleep before entering the room.
-
Step 4
Furnish your toddler a blanket or favorite stuffed toy to take to bed. The toy shouldn't have any cords or anything that can fall off and be swallowed. The object can help your toddler with separation anxiety and night time fears.
-
Step 5
Watch what your toddler eats for supper. A toddler who eats sugary foods in the evening can have a hard time settling down or sleeping all night.
-
Step 6
Let your toddler sleep in your room. Designate a cot or sleeping bag for him. Expert opinions vary on allowing children to sleep in parents rooms or beds, but some believe if your child sleeps all night it saves both sleep.
