New babies require plenty of special items, from clothing and bedding to bathing and first aid supplies. Pick up items to stock a baby's nursery over an extended period of time, or request them as shower gifts to help keep costs down.

Instructions

    Stock Baby's Clothing

  1. Step 1

Purchase 6 to 8 undershirts with snap fronts. These are useful when baby's umbilical cord is still healing.

  2. Step 2

Stock 6 to 10 onesies (one piece undershirts that snap at the crotch) so you're ready for after the umbilical cord heals.

  3. Step 3

Keep tiny feet warm with 6 to 8 pairs of socks and two to 3 pairs of booties.

  4. Step 4

Have 6 to 8 sleepers ready for baby, since these are the most versatile piece in an infant wardrobe.

  5. Step 5

Purchase 4 to 5 comfortable outfits for taking baby out and about.

  6. Step 6

Keep 1 or 2 sweaters on hand for cooler weather.

Have a snowsuit and 3 to 6 hats ready for winter.

  8. Stock Baby's Bedding

Look for a crib that will double as a toddler bed later on.

  10. Step 2

Select a matching bedding set that includes a comforter, bed skirt and fitted sheet.

  11. Step 3

Hang a colorful mobile over the crib to entertain baby.

  12. Step 4

Purchase 2 or 3 extra fitted sheets, as back ups.

  13. Step 5

Keep 5 to 6 receiving blankets handy to swaddle baby, a changing pad and a makeshift burp cloth.

  14. Stock Baby's Accessories

  15. Step 1

Purchase a changing table with plenty of storage space.

  16. Step 2

Hang a diaper stacker from the changing table, for easy access.

Store cotton balls, extra diapers, burp cloths, nail clippers and ear swabs underneath the changing table.

  19. Step 5

Stash baby bath supplies, such as soap, shampoo, washcloths and lotion in a separate container.

  20. Step 6

Place all first aid supplies, such as children's acetaminophen, ipecac, hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol safely out of the reach of babies and young children.
