Instructions

    • 1

Use an existing pattern or design your own on the computer or using paper. Choose colors for each design element.

    • 2

Decide on the dimensions for your flag and whether it will hang from a pole. Leave enough fabric on the left side to hang on a pole or on the top to hang like a banner. Knowing the diameter of the pole in advance will ensure a proper fit.

    • 3

Create paper pattern pieces, if necessary, then cut out the pattern.

    • 4

Purchase the fabric. Bring the flag dimensions and pattern pieces with you to the store to make sure you get the right amount of fabric.

    • 5

Trace and cut out the fabric design elements using the pattern. Stencils work well to trace letters and numbers.

    • 6

Pin and sew background fabric pieces together first. Double hem all the sides of the flag. Create a sleeve for the flag pole by folding the material over and then double hem the area at least five times.

    • 7

Lay out the fabric design elements the way you would like the final piece to look. Pin all design elements to the flag background and then sew them on using a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Double hem the sleeve of a color guard flag ten times so it can withstand the constant waving motion.
