Years ago, most kids did not need to think about exercise because they did it all the time while playing. Today, with video games and countless television shows to choose from, getting kids to exercise requires a little more planning. Following a few simple steps will help get your kids on their way to fitness.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Help them find an activity that they like. If you have an activity that you enjoy, share it with them. If they don't share your love of tennis, for example, help them find something more to their liking. Luckily, camps and exercise courses for kids abound in most areas of the country.
Step2
Get your kids in a routine that includes exercise. Once they have found an activity they like, get them on a schedule. It doesn't have to be rigid, but it does have to be regular. For example, maybe your son wants to do karate classes or gymnastics classes three times a week. Or perhaps your daughter hits the tennis courts with her friends on alternate evenings.
Step3
Be a good role model. Although you may not always believe it, you are an important role model for your child. Schedule your own exercise routine and your child will see how it's done.
Step4
Sneak in some miscellaneous exercise. Park a little further from a store, or walk instead of driving to a local establishment. You and your child will both get more exercise and you will set a good example.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to the Department of Health and Human Services, all children 2 years of age and older should get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most days of the week.
