Step 1
Inform the dentist prior to the appointment of any medical conditions. Some conditions, such as heart murmurs, will require antibiotic treatment for 1 week prior to the cleaning. This is to prevent possible blood stream infection that could possibly be caused by dental cleaning.
-
Step 2
Discuss concerns about anxiety beforehand. Dentists can provide relief from anxiety by prescribing a pill or giving gas during the appointment. Make sure to take any medications prescribed, and to have someone come with you if necessary.
-
Step 3
Inquire about anti-inflammatory use prior to the appointment. Sometimes inflammation of the gums occurs during cleanings, and taking an anti-inflammatory beforehand can relieve some of the discomfort.
-
Step 4
Relax. Dental cleanings are simple procedures that are performed every day on people of all ages. Although it is uncomfortable, remember hygienists are not there to judge you.
-
Step 5
Brush and floss daily. Simple preventative measures can make dental cleanings much easier. Plaque buildup can be decreased by brushing twice a day and flossing daily, and avoiding smoking also helps keep teeth healthy.
-
Step 6
Prepare to be at the office for roughly half an hour. The cleaning may take longer depending on the amount of plaque on your teeth and the wait time in the office.

on 10/8/2007 Most people with a heart murmur do not require any antibiotic premedication as of 4-2007. Talk to your physician. Dental cleanings should take more than a half hour for adults.
