How to Organize Drawers

Every time you jab your fingers rooting around in a disorganized drawer, you tell yourself you're going to organize it. This time, really do it. You can get organized using things you normally throw away, such as yogurt containers or film canisters. Once you get started on the following steps, it's almost fun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Drawer organizers
  • Nonslip drawer liners

Step1
Store small items in drawers by getting a number of containers to hold them. Home improvement and home decor stores sell kits that allow you to fit drawers with adjustable compartments.
Step2
Keep large items in place by lining the drawer with a cloth pad or nonslip drawer liner.
Step3
Roll clothing into cylinders to place in dresser drawers. This allows everything to be visible when you open the drawer, and you won't have to dig through the drawers to find the item you want.
Step4
Make your own organizers from household items. For instance, empty wrapping-paper tubes can be used to keep extension cords neat, and drinking straws keep necklaces from tangling. An ice-cube tray can keep items like paper clips, tacks and rubber bands organized.
Step5
Allow yourself one junk drawer where you can put things you don't have a specific place for. Trying to avoid having a junk drawer means that miscellaneous items will clutter your countertops and tables while you try to find a home for them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give every drawer a single purpose so when you want something specific, you'll know exactly which drawer it's kept in.
