Playing with a pet rodent is one of the most enjoyable aspects of having one of these furry pocket pals. Playtime can be bonding time between the two of you and offer an enjoyable experience for both. But because rodents are usually quite small and fragile, there are some things you can do to ensure that playing with your pet is the rewarding activity it should be.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn your pet's handling preferences. Playing with your pet will be more enjoyable for both it and you if you are conscious of how much it likes, or doesn't like, to be handled.

  2. Step 2

Buy a ball and let your pet run around your house in it. Just be sure to keep it away from any stairs or sharp drop-offs.

  3. Step 3

Take your pet out of its cage and let it run around in an enclosed space. Do not let it roam the house freely (especially smaller rodents), since it may decide to hole up somewhere, never to be seen again.

  4. Step 4

Carry your rodent around on your shoulder, given that it will let you. Rats will especially enjoy this.

  5. Step 5

Stroke your pet gently within its cage and do not handle it often until it has become comfortable with you.

  6. Step 6

Hold your pet in your hands or your lap and pet it softly. Allow it to adventure up your arms or crawl around on your legs.

  7. Step 7

Create a playground for your pet using PVC pipe with connectors. Put this in the cage or set it on the ground within an enclosed area and let your rodent run free. Strategically place little treats throughout the setup to encourage your pet.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your pet rodent does not like to be handled, you will have to learn to be content with simply watching and admiring it. No animal should be forcefully held against its wishes.
  • Make sure that any escape routes are completely sealed off if you're going to put your pet on the ground or other surface outside of its cage. Many small rodents will take off if given the chance.
  • When playing with your pet, keep it away from cats, dogs or other animals that might be aggressive toward it.
